May Day Challenge!

The Maypole is a phallic (Male) symbol. The wreath at the top represents the feminine. (as the man is to the woman, so is the pole to the wreath)  On Beltaine / Mayday, The Maypole is adorned with flowers & ribbons.

It is then erected in the center of the circle. There is one ribbon for each of the single lads & maidens who will be participating. The participants form a circle around the Maypole in a boy girl boy girl fashion.  Boys facing one direction & girls the opposite. When the music begins they take up their ribbons and dance around the pole weaving in & out.

When done correctly, this pattern braids the ribbons down the pole & the circle gets smaller & smaller.  At the end, there will be one boy & one girl bound to the pole. These two are named the king & queen of the festivities. They spend the rest of the festival as a couple. Their duty was to then "fertilize the fields" by sneaking off during the night & copulating in the soil. This act was said to assure a fertile & plentiful crop that year. Any children produced by the rite were revered & adored by all.

stage in warm jewel tones. Very inviting piece

This is a very wonderful manip. The way she placed the models provides us with a great perspective.
Telling a story of a singer missing her loved one who just happens to standing behind her.
